Lawn Aeration Service

Aeration of the soil helps create a porous consistency in the earth. What's aerating? Glad you asked! Basically, we take a great little machine called an aerator run it throughout your grass covered soil. It digs up little chunks of soil about 3 inches deep. This helps with a couple things: it helps water drain through (and not run off!) by creating a more porous soil environment and it provides more surface area for young seeds to take hold.
Grass is a plant species that naturally needs this sort of annual tilling. Evolutionary, grasses evolved alongside ruminant mammals like cattle, bison, sheep, goats, and other hoofed animals who would aerate the soil with their sharp hooves, then fertilize the soil with their feces. This keeps soil filled with living micro-fauna and nutrients. When we aerate a space, we are simply mimicking the processes of nature so that you have healthy and thriving area to relax in. Speaking of Seeding, we are happy to lay down new seeds strategically at different stages of the year. Beginning in early spring we can lay down cold hardy varieties that thrive in the frosty temperatures and as the seasons progress we lay down warm season varieties that adore the good ole heat and sunshine of the Tidewater Region.

Aeration is typically done before seeding grass and applying fertilizer. This is one of our favorite lawn practices, because you can really see a huge difference within weeks. As we mentioned above, the holes in the soil allow seeds and nutrients and minerals to find more surface area and depth in the soil. This allows our use of seed and fertilizer to be less, because it's a more efficient practice than simply throwing the amendments on the flat, nonporous ground. Thus we use less and save resources across the board--that's a good thing for everybody, just like aeration.

Creating a porous soil is especially important in pieces of land that have been compacted by cars, foot traffic, heavy machinery, or whatever else. Compacted soil makes it very difficult for grass to thrive and for nutrients to be accessible. It also doesn't absorb water! That's no good at all.

In summary, aeration helps fortify your grass. You'll be able to see a big difference in a healthy grass and an unhealthy grass species. Because the roots below the soil are so happy, the rest of the plant visibly thrives! It's a good deal.

Aeration takes a good bit of investment. Even the manual machines for aeration cost several hundred dollars. Check it out on google if you want. You could rent one, but you still might not know exactly how to put that bad boy to use, or even when to use it in a seasonal sense. That's cool. That's why we're here and why we went into business in the first place. We believe that sometimes asking a professional to come aerate your lawn, among other things, is actually a pretty great idea. We have an amazing set of aerators for both residential and commercial needs.
