Seeding, Overseeding Service
We are more than happy to lay down new seeds strategically at different stages of the year. Beginning in early spring we can lay down cold hardy varieties that thrive in the frosty temperatures and as the seasons progress we lay down warm season varieties that adore the good ole heat and sunshine of the Tidewater Region.
Seeding and overseeding are very important practices for establishing a healthy lawn culture. There are several times of year that a lawn can be seeded and each has its own strategic benefits. Spring seeding is interestingly the least favorite among lawn care professionals, while winter overseeding is actually quite popular, obviously with cold varieties. To some it's a surprise to learn that grass is a seed bearing plant. Often when grass is over mowed and never goes to seed, it doesn't get the chance to continue on reproducing like it wood in some natural contexts. Seeding and overseeding allow us to bring new grass life to the lawn so that the culture of grass is abundant. This helps with many things: it helps the grass species to have a vibrant, robust immune system that can withstand pathogenic fungus, blight, and temperature extremes. Seeds are of upmost importance! Seeding, however can be a time consuming project, requiring some know-how, research, and a few pieces of equipment. If you are interested in seeding your own lawn, we definitely recommend doing your due diligence and learning what varieties and techniques work well here on the Peninsula. We're all about empowering folks to feel like they can take on a project like this on their own, but rest assured, if you're looking for professional help, we'll be there, scattering seeds with precision, joy, and just at the right moment. Seeding is typically done after aerating the soil, which can be another time consuming task, not to mention most homeowners don't have an aerator machine. Our crew will happily provide an aeration, seeding, and fertilizing protocol for you. This three in one protocol is essential for keeping your lawn lush and bountiful. You'll be able to see a huge difference in grass density and thickness, as well as color. It all comes from adequate nutrients, healthy soil, microbial diversity, and new genetic information from the seeds. We're more than happy to set this up for you this season. Just give us a ring to get a quote! (757)-702-5070 We also are happy to apply appropriate and measured amounts of fertilizer. Not too much, not too little. We find that balance of proper nutrients for lawn health and we apply carefully and considerately. We throw down various kinds of grass seed throughout the seasons. The Peninsula has a plant hardiness zone rating of 7b to 8a, meaning that it's actually quite warm in the winter compared to most places in Virginia! This means that more warm-adapted grass seeds can thrive here, whereas they wouldn't in a town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Accordingly, we work with a mix of varieties like the fescues, carpetgrass, blue grass, ryegrass, and others. We've got the know how of when, where, and to what extent to plant these grasses.
